How Much Wood ?

The weather here is still very summer like and very unusual.
We will be cooler next week, more to normal temps but because we have been so warm I think it will be a shock.
My burning bush is starting to turn. But the poor plants and trees are becoming very dry from the heat.
Those crazy geraniums are still going.
And my hydrangea is very happy.
Happy zinnias, next year I am planting packages and packages of them.
Today we started the big job of bringing wood in for the winter. We do not burn as much as we use to. And who knows how many more years we will continue to do this. But when there is a storm howling outside that fireplace feels pretty darn good.
So how much wood can an old couple chuck? About a cord.

A couple of friends and I traveled to the talk on herbs as medicine. The woman presenting had a lot of knowledge and I do think I will visit her shop soon. She was talking about medicinal weeds. She said she finds they show up in her garden just when she needs them most. Nature is a wonderful thing.
She gave us garden tea, enough for a couple of cups.

Someone asked if the lake we were on last weekend (squam) was were On Golden Pond was filmed? And yes it is!!! If you have never seen it you are missing out on a real treat.

I had to drop my car early this morning for new brakes. Husband took me to breakfast. We both have had heartburn since. Ugg!
Have a great week!

I remember On Golden Pond! I love that you were there.
There's nothing like a wood fire in the winter. Somehow it just feels warmer than regular heat.

My geraniums are still beautiful. I'd love to have them next year so I was thinking of taking cuttings to root in water. Have you done that before?

I cut them back take them out of the dirt wrap in newspaper and put them in a cool closet. Replant in side about march early April.

Your plants are all looking so very well yet.... Most of mine are getting quite tired looking and, frankly, I'm tired of taking care of them (but, of course, feel guilty NOT taking care of them). I bet I would have loved the herb class. While I am not a tea drinker, I do use herbs medicinally. In fact, I just bottled my goldenrod tincture for the year. Another storm moving in as I write. I hope the power doesn't go out again as my generator is still not repaired. (Nor are any of the other things that got fried in the last lightning storm.) And I am going to be in need of light and power as the next few days are going to be pure chaos getting ready for my son's wedding. ~Robin~

I love the warmth of a wood fire, but just having a fireplace most of the heat just goes up the chimney.
Our days have been warm with cool nights. I LOVE IT!!!

Wow, your flowers are still beautiful. I'm with you - I plan to plant lots of Zinnias next summer. They are so hearty and so beautiful. The lecture on herbal medicine sounds so interesting! Have a great weekend!

I love the quote about sitting in nature- it is very true.
We finally had three days of rain this week. Before that, we had the driest summer I can recall. Zinnias give the most bang for your buck!

The medicinal weeds must have been an interesting talk. Good luck with the wood. We had a wood stove in our first home. My husband says we haven’t been warm since we moved out of that house.

Are those the same geraniums you planted from last year? My gosh if so they are beauties. We have to get some wood brought in for our fireplace. We di it just in case we do lose power, but there are nights we just like the ambiance of having a fire. Fall is definitely coming. Janice

We had a little break from summer's heat, but are now back in the 90s. I wonder if your method of wintering over geraniums would work for other plants. Your geraniums are always so beautiful. A couple of days ago, I cut more zinnias which I will dry for seed.

Good morning beautiful flowers. I so miss not having our two woodstoves-it saved so much money and I just loved the whole process of the wood cutting etc. I remember the year when this job was just too much for my husband-and I always suffered with my back "going out for weeks" We decided it was time to switch to gas heat sigh I remember when we hooked up the gas furnace and the sensation of just flipping it to on was amazing for heat haha.

Rain was predicted for most of rug camp but surprisingly it only rained a little one day and the rest of the time at camp it was also summerlike. Am home now and weatherman says it will feel like fall tomorrow.
I like the feel and ambience of a wood fire too but had the fireplace changed to fire logs instead. Still have the ambience but propane is so expensive I may forgo that beauty aspect this year.
