My first iris of the summer. I have lots of buds in lots of colors to bloom.
I was on our back deck, and a wasp wouldn't leave me alone!
So if the old wives' tale is to be believed, if the wasps build a low nest, a mild winter ahead, fingers crossed!
There was a chipmunk making all kinds of noise. I went out to chase him off, and I guess he was just warning the world that a turkey was here. The poor turkey is all by itself. We see it off and on.And this rat is at my daughter's house. He has eaten all the buds off her stargazer lilies.*********************
I am playing mahjong a couple of times a week. On Tuesday, I was not winning, so I got up and circled my chair to change my luck. They were laughing (a thing my mom did when she was not winning at cards). I won the next two hands!!
Who is laughing now? Lol.
Do you have any folklore or superstitions?

I really don't, but I like these! Next time I'm not winning at something I'm trying your moms trick!
I don’t really have any superstitions. But hey… look at you win twice!!
You were lucky not to get stung by that wasp. I imagine the wasp nest has been dealt with.
Βelieve in superstitions or not, what you did was effective! I'm not sure that counts as a superstition, but every time I read a book, I have to smell it several times while I'm reading. Does anyone else do that, I wonder?
What a tiny and perfectly shaped wasp’s nest. Happy you weren’t stung.
Funny about circling your chair and changing your luck 😱
Interesting about the wasp nest theory ~ I had one and last week got stung on the chest a I had a v-neck tee shirt on. Changing your luck at cards, now that is funny! And bet your friends might even try that in the future.

That's a serious looking nest! Luck or not, three cheers!
Your chipmunk story made me laugh, cause I just shared a chipmunk story on my post today. That wasp nest is so cool - so much detail goes into weaving that. I am wondering now what is it made from?
Happy June!
My mother was the queen of superstitions, old wives' tales and folkloric predictions but I have not heard of either of the two you mentioned. While I do buy in to some of them, I'm definitely not sold on the wasp nest one. Each and every year I have multiple wasp and hornet nests and they are high, low and everywhere in between LOL. My lilies, like my tulips have been shaved down to nothing. Makes me so sad.
I also play mah jongg and sill be doing so later today and will share this superstition with my fellow players, but only after trying it myself😏
Glad you did not get stung by that wasp. We had a nest last year on our porch...and had to get rid of it quickly. Folklore, my paternal grandfather always told me that the Robin was not the bird to watch for for a sign of Spring. It was the Red Winged Blackbird here. He also said when the birds start flying low to the ground, it means rain is a coming. Last year I had a chipmuck sounding the alarm and I was the enemy. LOL It was real close to me just a chattering, and finally stopped when I would not move. LOL Janice
Oh I hope you are right about the winter being mild...I have heard that same tale but it was in regards to hornets' nests. Well it just goes to show that your mom taught you well. Thanks for the wildlife tales. Have a blessed weekend.
That poor single turkey just roaming around breaks my heart a little, but hopefully it's just enjoying the peaceful views. That rat at your daughter's house, though? Oh, absolutely not! Eating the stargazer lilies is a total crime against gardening. I would be so heartbroken over those buds!
But oh my goodness, the Mahjong story is the absolute best! Your mom definitely passed down some powerful magic to you. Circling the chair to reset the luck is such a classic move, and the fact that you instantly won the next two hands is iconic! "Who is laughing now?" is right!
My grandmother used to swear that if your right hand itched, you were going to receive money, but if your left hand itched, you were going to lose it, so I still find myself scratching my right palm extra hard just in case!
I love your nature photos. Interesting about the wasp nest.
Beautiful blog
