And they have grazed on hollyhocks and coneflowers. We think it is porcupine. I Now have hot peppers dusted on everything (not convinced it will help)
And the birds ate all my tiny cucumber plants that were coming up. I can't win!
My daughter's neighborhood is dealing with bunnies. It's always something when you garden.
Back to the rain for the weekend.

Yes, gardening can be a challenge. Last year, a rat took up residence under our shed and ate all my delicious sweet grapes just before they were ripe and ready to harvest. Last year was a discouraging gardening year. I am hoping for better this year.
I don't even try anymore. My problem is insects and those microscopic aphids or whatever they are called. On top of that, our tap water is horrible for plants, (people ,too, for that matter - too many chemicals) so I have to haul water from the river or buy bottled water. I have spent so much money on plants only to have them die from something. No more.

Welcome to my world of destruction. :-( I don't think I have porcupines, but I have deer, squirrels, chipmunks, weasels (yes, weasels), and bunnies...lots and LOTS of bunnies.Tulips, lilies, phlox, hollyhock and everything in between that's started to show their tops here in Nod (even chives, allium, lavender, and other smelly treats they aren't supposed to enjoy) have succumbed to their hunger (and/or shenanigans??) (I'm surprised, though, that your daughter's dog doesn't at least ward off the rabbits...my Snowdog did.) Good luck - if you find an effective repellant to any of the pests, do please let us know.
Grrr! So irritating! We have rabbits that chew things, and chipmunks that are so cute, but dig holes around the plants. I hope the peppers work!
Oh that is SO frustrating! How ever does one keep a porcupine out of the garden?! The mockingbirds made me cranky yesterday. They ate every ripe blueberry on our bushes. I told Steve I would rather pull them up than go to all that work just for the birds to eat them. We put an electric fence around our raised beds every summer to keep the deer out.
You are right, it is always something when dealing with a garden! Yikes!
I feel your pain. The voles ate everything last year. An air gun took care of them. I used plastic pipe to make collars for my seedlings. Just when I figure out one way to block a critter a different critter shows up. I guess it keeps you young trying to outthink them.
How disappointing to find your little plants munched on by critters of various sizes. I hope the hot pepper dust acts as a deterrent. I suppose it has to be reapplied after rain :(
Here it's squirrels. They don't even eat the plants, just tear them up and throw the bits for me to sweep up!

It does make gardening challenging as you are providing a veggie buffet for the critters and yes rain is a'coming once again and just in time for the weekend!
Oh your poor plants. There is always something so hungry and they eat everything. I like organic but its never really worked for me. Everything gets eaten.
My mom always has the deer that wreak havoc in her garden. She finally put up a high fence that is not tight so they cannot jump over it. Hope the peppers work for you. Janice
